How to fix Windows 2008 R2 Activation Errors

Today, out of the blue, we encountered a server in evaluation mode. The W2K8 R2 server lost it’s Windows activation to the KMS Server.
I tried to reactivate using the slmgr.vbs /ato but that didn’t fix the problem.

When looking in the KMS host (the activation server) eventlog in the Key Management Service, there was no event of suggesting the server tried to contact the KMS server.
The error on the KMS Client (the server in evaluation mode) we got the following error 0xC004F074.
This directed me in a communication error between the windows server and the KMS server.

This is how i managed to reactivate the server:

  • Start an elevated command prompt
  • ipconfig /flushdns => Refresh the dns cache
  • slmgr.vbs /ckms    => Clear all KMS servers in cache and set to auto discover
  • slmgr.vbs /ato        => Activate the Key

That solved it form me. I hope this quick post can help others with this annoying error.
More information can be found at configuring KMS Clients.
